When I was younger, just starting my career in the insurance industry, I always felt uncomfortable in social settings when someone asked me what I did for a living. I was afraid if I told them I sold life insurance they would abruptly excuse themselves and head for the nearest exit. So instead, I came up with other vague explanations for what I did for a living. I became a General Agent or financial advisor or financial marketing manager; anything but a life insurance agent. I didn't scare anyone away, but I left them confused as to what I actually did to support myself and my family.
I've now been in the insurance industry fo 28 years. My legitimate titles past and present include, agent, broker, General Agent, Regional Director, Field Vice-President, Marketing Organization and on and on. It's now time for me to set the record straight: I Sell Life Insurance.
I sell life insurance to my friends, relatives and clients. I sell to referrals of friends, relatives and business associates. I advertise to sell insurance to new prospects and acquaintances. I advertise on the television and radio. I advertise on the internet and in newspapers and magazines. I send bulk mail to reach more prospects for my insurance products. I've even used telemarketing to reach potential clients.
I recruit agents, brokers and agencies to sell life insurance as well. Companies approach me to sell and even wholesale their products. To me, I still sell life insurance.
I do a good job of selling life insurance. I offer secure, competitive products from many of America's top life insurance companies. I sell term insurance, whole life insurance and universal life insurance. I sell non-medical products to clients who desire coverage, but don't want to hassle with an exam. I sell large policies for estate and business protection and small policies for burial and final expense. I sell Accidental Death and Children's Coverage. I have insurance clients in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
So the next time you talk with me and ask me what I do professionally; if I give you a vague answer, remind me, I sell life insurance.
